The Background

The next frontier in closing the STEM gap is AI. Girls & nonbinary youth are getting left behind when it comes to AI: 71% of the AI workforce is men. This audience is constantly being told AI is the future, but they feel left out of the conversation. AI is being built around them – fast, biased and dominated by people who don’t look like them – rather than with them. Meanwhile, concerns about the negative impact of AI on the environment and communities also hold them back from getting involved.

The world needs girls & nonbinary youth in AI!  In fact, their values, creativity, and ethics don’t just belong in AI — they’re essential to helping it achieve its full potential. We need to convince girls and nonbinary youth that AI needs their perspective.

About the Campaign

Speak On It is Girls Who Code’s campaign encouraging girls and nonbinary youth to have a voice in shaping the future of AI. We’ve partnered with leading creators, and the TikTok show Are You Okay? to share diverse perspectives and spark conversation.
